Your home’s air conditioning unit uses a refrigerant, also known as freon, to produce cool air and keep your home comfortable during the summer months. For many years, R22 was the preferred refrigerant in air conditioners, but due to environmental concerns it is being phased out in the US.

This move away from R22 has sparked a series of questions from people who still rely on units using this refrigerant. In the sections to follow, we will try to answer a few of those questions and let you know how working with a local and certified HVAC company can help you regardless of your unit type.

Our company is proud to offer HVAC services to people in the East Bay Area, and we have a team of certified technicians with a customer-focused approach to help with your HVAC needs.

What is R22 refrigerant?

R22 is a type of refrigerant which was used for many years in air conditioning units. R22 was developed as an effective refrigerant, but in recent years research shows it is part of a group of chemicals which is proven to do damage to the ozone layer. Since this is the case, its use in the United States is being phased out, and R22 is no longer produced in the country and it can’t be imported.

What is the alternative to R22?

Newer AC units use 410-A refrigerant. 410-A has a lot of the same properties as R22 and is just as effective as a refrigerant in air conditioners, it just does not have the negative chemicals which affect the ozone layer.

Should I replace my R22 unit?

If your unit uses R22, you don’t have to panic. While R22 is being phased out, the EPA’s plan to phase out chemicals such as R22 is an ongoing process which will last for at least eight more years. If you are concerned about your unit and looking to replace it before R22 becomes more scarce, there are incentives available to people who switch, and you will likely get a much more efficient unit.

Can my R22 unit be repaired or retrofitted?

Licensed HVAC technicians are still able to make repairs on units which use R22, but the price of R22 is increasing as it becomes more scarce. Since AC units are designed to work with just one type of freon, it isn’t possible to just switch to 410-A through a retrofit.

What should I expect from my AC tech?

Our technicians are trained to work on R22 units and are accustomed to discussing this change with our customers. You can expect a professional approach and a technician who can evaluate your situation and provide a recommended course of action which meets the needs of your home, your budget and your current AC unit.

Will replaced a furnace for me located in my basement. I was pleasantly surprised on how neat and clean the installation went. No issues and the furnace works great. I will have Cozy Conditions back this spring to do a service check on my AC.

We would gladly hire Cozy Conditions again for a project and would recommend them wholeheartedly. The work was done with care, they kept their commitments, and the work area was tidy and orderly.

It was time to replace our existing unit. We got several bids, and so happy we went with Will. He was very informative, honest, and we really appreciated that. The timeline/install was exactly what he had said. I highly recommend Cozy Conditions! Thank you Will!!

After screening several contractors and well-known HVAC businesses, it was clear to me that Cozy Conditions was the best overall value. I received daily updates on the progress of the job and Will always checked in to make sure I didn’t have any questions.

Clifford H.

Will not only did an excellent job of both my installations, but also charged me a rate which was extremely reasonable. He installed a mini-split system on the roof of my office building and an exhaust fan in the men’s restroom. He is now my regular HVAC tech.
